½ cup (1 stick/125 g/4.4. oz) butter, plus extra for greasing
1 cup (225 g/7.9 oz) white sugar
1½ cups (125 g/4.4 oz) raisins
1¾ cups (250 g/8.8 oz) all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon ground cloves
½ teaspoon ground allspice
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ cup (125 g/4.4 oz) ground almonds
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon hot water
1 cup (275 g/9.7 oz) unsweetened applesauce
Preheat the oven to 180 °C (356 °F). Grease and line two round cake pans.
Cream butter and sugar in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy.
Mix in the raisins, flour, spices, almonds and applesauce.
Dissolve baking soda in hot water and stir into the batter.
Pour the batter into the prepared cake pans.
Bake for 45 minutes until golden.

Transfer the cakes to a wire rack and leave them to cool.
